The Agoga bird cries in the night when something bad is going to happen. What happened to these girls was unforgivable. A true story of haunting beauty and triumph. Because of the poetry and charm and sincerity of Anthony Barton's writing, you know at once that he not only cares deeply about the terrible ordeal Teresa and her schoolmates have to go though, but also about the land and people of a paradise torn to pieces. The sky tasted of mongongo nuts, and because the sky was so close and so delicious, people sometimes broke off more than they could eat and threw the leftovers on the village trash heap. You want to frame this delicious language and eat it yourself - just as I am absolutely sure you will want to start reading this gorgeous book without delay. -- Sulby Hall Review [With a preface by Grace Akallo.]

Teresa Anthony Barton Grace Akallo Books

The co-writer of this marvel of a book, Grace Akallo, is also co-author of GIRL SOLDIER. She was fifteen when the Lord's Resistance Army raided her school. In her introduction, Grace puts `Teresa' into perspective: "There has been talk about child soldiers and the role of young people in war yet few have written their story for young people to read. Young people have always been left out, but this brings them to the fore, and young people will be able to read `Teresa' without having nightmares. This story is fictional and yet the facts are truthful."

I am not a young person. In fact haven't been one for quite some time, but I can say without reservation that although this is perfectly fit reading for the young, it is also quite lovely reading for people of any age. "Lovely" not because this story isn't about some very ugly goings-on indeed, but because of the poetry and charm and sincerity of Anthony Barton's writing. You know at once that he not only cares deeply about the terrible ordeal Grace Akallo and her schoolmates have to go through, but also about the land and people of Northern Uganda where all these horrors took place: a paradise torn to pieces by bullets.

We see and hear and smell and taste and touch everything as it happens to Grace and crouch down beside her in her "place to hide inside her head...with neat stones that fit together so closely there are no cracks between them." And all the while we are buoyed along through the bush on more of Barton's nimble prose.

Just a handful of examples from so many:

* "`DWONGO!' cried the school bell... `DWONGO! DWONGO! DWONGO!' Dozens of birds took off in a clatter of purple, green and crimson wings. Martha was second down the rope, clumsy in her haste, followed by Hildegard, flashing her elegant legs in bars of golden, smoky light."
* "A flash of brilliant light exploded on the scene and halted a million rain drops in mid-flight."
* "The bruised air, torn apart moments ago by a string of explosions, sang now with the keening and despairing cries of hundreds of wounded and dying children."
* "Teresa's "Christian" name the nuns had given her instead of her beautiful Acoli name "sounded horrible, like an insect rubbing its back with its feet..."
* "The sky tasted of mongongo nuts. And because the sky was so close and so delicious, people sometimes broke off more sky than they could eat and threw the leftovers on the village trash heap."
