They're the scum of America's pariah service.

The United States Foreign Legion's washouts, criminals and unsuccessful deserters go into the Black Gangs – labor groups sent at gunpoint to work in places nobody else will.

Reluctant Legion soldier Paul Mullins almost ended up in one. Now he's guarding them. First priority prevent escapes. Second priority maintain discipline. Protecting the convicts themselves comes dead last.

Until a sudden disaster erupts, leaving Mullins, his team and twenty of the Legion's garbage in the middle of a hostile no-man’s-land. With no resources to speak of, they’ve got to cross two hundred miles of lawless desert. Between them and safety are rebellious aliens, European infiltrators, brutal terrain, and human renegades.

But along the way, a few of the Legion’s worst might just earn redemption…

Honor of the Legion Legion series Book 2 eBook Leo Champion Cedar Sanderson Wayne Borean

Leo Champion's second book in his _Legion_ series delivers high-tension military adventure with can't-put-it-down pacing and high believability.

Nebbish-who-was, Paul Mullins, was tricked into enlisting in the American Legion (in the first volume of the series). Here, he is assigned to another far away, poorly regarded and poorly governed planet in the American Empire. The red team, a pan-European alliance, has a dastardly and deniable plot to bring down the American planetary government and its satraps, a race of extraterrestrials who make good Orcs (!). The gritty details of life and command and action, in a line infantry organization spread too thin, outnumbered, and under attack, provide much of the meat of the book.

The writing style and plot elements are clearly influenced by MilSF icons Dr. Jerome E, Pournelle, Col. Thomas Kratman, and John Ringo, as well as (possibly) Michael Williamson. The action starts with almost the first page, and doesn't let up until the epilogue; no one is invulnerable, and no "overpowered characters" (D&D/RPG reference, for those of you who have played) are present to tilt the playing field.

Leo's characters are all believable, and some (not all) are sympathetic. Both administrative and military politics are filled with an entirely familiar (to anyone who has worked in a large bureaucracy) mix of greedy, naive, dedicated, selfish, sociopathic, venal, and honorable personalities. "Rich tapestry" is an overused term in reviews, but is applicable here more than most places.

Disclosure: Leo Champion is an acquaintance of long standing. I paid full price for this book.

Honor of the Legion Legion series Book 2 eBook Leo Champion Cedar Sanderson Wayne Borean Reviews

A good story, fun and fast pace. Great characters, good plot points that built suspense.
Loved this book. Picked up where the first one left off, and was evenly paced until a furious end. Would highly recommend.
A pretty good Foreign Legion Thriller. Some new characters get added and some of the old get fleshed out. The sequels are set up.
This book and its predecessor are well crafted action novels set in an almost believable future. Developed characters abound and national traits are well researched.
This kept me riveted, I love the way the author is able to blend classic military fiction into an offworld colonial situation with realistic enemies and economic issues motivating characters in a believable fashion instead tgat stupid star trek idea of peple moving to dangerous worlds for no better reason than to plant the flag.
It has finally arrived if you liked the first book in the series then this is a must read. I have been waiting for this book to arrive since reading the first novel Legion and the book carry on directly after the first one left off and continues on with the legionnaires deployed to a new planet with a new enemy. While this book could be read as a stand alone novel I would recommend reading the Legion first. This is the authors third book of the military scifi genre and the second in this series a definite up and comer of the genre he is one to keep an eye on. I definitely recommend this novel as well as the others that he has written.
Usually fast paced books that Biff-Bam-Boom along do it at the expense of the characters being little more than cardboard cutouts. This was nonstop action with all kinds of interesting interaction between the characters and lots of little jabs at authoritarians. It even had some good humor. I've read Leo's previous books and each gets better. This has nothing to apologize for put up against any BIG publisher. It had a good opening and a great ending without making you feel the last chapter was an ad for the sequel. THIS is a sequel but it stands alone just fine. I won't delete this one but keep it to read again.
